Liposuction is often referred to by other terms, such as, lipo, liposplasty, liposculpture, suction lipectomy, ultrasonic assisted lipoplasty, or tumescent. Essentially, the difference is the technique used to suction the excess fat.
Liposuction is one of oldest and most popular aesthetic procedures used by men and women to safely and effectively remove unwanted fat from specific areas of the body. Many men and women who have tried dieting and exercise but are unable to remove stubborn fat bugles have liposuction. Patients find liposuction can sculpt their bodies, giving them their desired shape.

Who is a Candidate for Liposuction?
Patients who obtain the best body sculpting results with liposuction are at or close to their normal weight. Liposuction isn’t a weight loss procedure. Liposuction should be viewed as a body contouring procedure that removes contained pockets of bothersome body fat.
At Careaga Plastic Surgery Center, Dr. Daniel E. Careaga, uses liposuction on the following body areas to reduce unwanted fat:
- Abdomen/Stomach area – upper and lower (Muffin tops)
- Inner and outer thighs
- Necks and jowls
- Waists or love handles
- Enlarged breast in men (gynecomastia)
Candidates also should have good skin tone and elasticity. Be advised that liposuction does not tighten loose skin and liposuction does not remove dimples or cellulite.
Liposuction can be done alone to remove fat pockets or in combination with other cosmetic body contouring procedures such as tummy tuck (abdominoplasty) or breast reduction.

Dr. Daniel Careaga’s Liposuction Technique and Protocol
Dr. Daniel Careaga explains that, simply speaking, liposuction “sucks” fat from targeted areas of the body by using small cannulas. The cannula is inserted under the skin and a high-pressure vacuum suction is applied to remove the fat.
Over the last three decades, significant advancements in liposuction techniques now allow a skilled plastic surgeon to safely and effectively remove a large number of fat cells. There are many very effective liposuction techniques, including tumescent liposuction and ultrasonic assisted liposuction.
Using a local anesthetic, Dr. Carega injects several liters of a saline solution below the skin in the identified target area to be suctioned. The amount of fluid pumped into the area being liposuctioned is always greater than the amount of fat to be removed. By adding fluid to the area, space is created between the fatty tissue and muscle, which allows for precision in moving the cannula. The excess fat is sucked out though the small cannulas.
Liposuction is an outpatient procedure. The length of the procedure depends upon the area or areas that patients are undergoing liposuction. Dr. Careaga discusses with each patient the anticipated time for the procedure.
There are a variety of liposuction techniques available that are referred to by their brand names from Smart Lipo to Vaser LipoSelection.® The primary difference is in the type of energy source used to suction the fat. For example, Vaser LipoSelection® uses ultrasonic energy to precisely break apart fat deposits for easy, safe removal. This type of liposuction can safely remove excess fatty deposits from your stomach, waist, thighs, buttocks, hips, knees, arms and back. Vaser LipoSelection® can also be used to sculpt and define your neck and chin.
Dr. Daniel E. Careaga will discuss the type of liposuction that is best suited to achieve your fat reduction and body shaping aesthetic goals.
Recovery and Aftercare
Careaga Plastic Surgery Center’s liposuction patients are advised that their recovery will depend on the length of the liposuction procedure, the areas and extent of treatment needed, the volume of fat removed, and each individual’s response to the procedure.
Patients experience some pain and discomfort after the procedure due the swelling. This pain is commonly described by many patients as a very, sore feeling similar to that experienced after a strenuous workout. Swelling and bruising are quite common after liposuction surgery and may last for weeks or even months. Pain after liposuction can usually be managed with over the counter medications.
It is important to wear the prescribed compression garment after liposuction so that swelling and bruising can be controlled. Dr. Careaga will advise you when you can remove the compression garment. It is important to plan for sufficient rest and recovery time to allow your body to completely heal after liposuction. After a few days, you will be able to return to work and normal activities.
