Supplements Before Plastic Surgery: What to Stop, What to Continue, and How Arnica Can Help with Bruising

Patients preparing for plastic surgery often remember to discuss prescription medications, but many forget something equally important: supplements.

Vitamins, herbal products, and wellness powders are incredibly common today. Many patients take multiple supplements daily to support energy, sleep, stress, inflammation, or overall health. The problem is that some of these products can increase bleeding, interfere with anesthesia, affect blood pressure, or alter how your body heals after surgery.

Because of this, most plastic surgeons recommend stopping many supplements one to two weeks before surgery unless specifically instructed otherwise.

Understanding which supplements to stop—and which ones may actually help recovery—can make a real difference in your surgical outcome.

Why Supplements Matter Before Plastic Surgery

Plastic surgery procedures, such as tummy tuck, liposuction, breast surgery, and facelift, depend on precise surgical technique and predictable healing.

Certain supplements can cause:

  • Increased bleeding
  • Prolonged bruising
  • Higher swelling
  • Interaction with anesthesia medications
  • Delayed healing

Even though many supplements are marketed as “natural,” they can still have real pharmacologic effects in the body.

For that reason, patients should always provide their surgeon with a complete list of all supplements, vitamins, powders, and herbal products they take.

Top Supplements Patients Should Stop Before Surgery

Below are some of the most common supplements plastic surgeons recommend stopping prior to surgery.

1. Ashwagandha

Stop one to two weeks before surgery.

Ashwagandha has become extremely popular for stress reduction, sleep, testosterone support, and cortisol control.

However, it can create several concerns around surgery:

  • It may increase sedation when combined with anesthesia.
  • It may affect blood pressure.
  • It may alter blood sugar levels.
  • It can interact with thyroid medications.
  • There are rare reports of liver toxicity.

Because anesthesia medications already affect sedation and metabolism, most surgeons recommend stopping ashwagandha before surgery.

2. Fish Oil / Omega-3 Supplements

Often stopped one to two weeks before surgery.

Fish oil is commonly taken for cardiovascular health and inflammation. However, it can affect platelet function and potentially increase bleeding or bruising.

Although the data is somewhat mixed, many plastic surgeons recommend pausing fish oil before elective surgery to reduce the risk of  bruising.

3. Vitamin E

Stop before surgery.

Vitamin E can interfere with normal clotting and increase the risk of bleeding. High-dose vitamin E is commonly found in skin, hair, and anti-aging supplements, so it is important to check labels carefully.

4. Garlic Supplements

Stop one to two weeks before surgery.

Garlic used in cooking is not an issue. However, concentrated garlic supplements can increase the risk of bleeding and affect platelet function. Thus, these supplements are routinely discontinued before surgery.

5. Ginkgo Biloba

Stop before surgery.

Ginkgo is often taken for memory and circulation. Unfortunately, it can also increase bleeding risk by affecting platelet activity, potentially worsening bruising after surgery.

6. Ginseng

Stop before surgery.

Ginseng is common in energy supplements and performance formulas.

Potential concerns include:

  • Increased bleeding risk
  • Changes in blood pressure
  • Changes in blood sugar levels
  • Interaction with anesthesia

7. Turmeric / Curcumin

Stop before surgery.

Turmeric supplements are widely used for inflammation and joint pain. In high doses, curcumin may increase bleeding risk and interact with anticoagulant medications, so most surgeons recommend stopping turmeric supplements prior to surgery.

8. St. John’s Wort

Stop before surgery.

St. John’s Wort is often used for mood support, but it can significantly interfere with how the body metabolizes medications. This may alter how anesthesia drugs work during surgery.

9. Valerian Root

Stop before surgery.

Valerian is a common herbal sleep aid. Because it has sedative effects, it may interact with anesthesia medications and increase sedation risk.

10. Multi-ingredient Wellness Blends

Stop before surgery.

Many modern supplements combine multiple herbs, adaptogens, and stimulants into one product.

Common ingredients may include:

  • Green tea extract
  • Ashwagandha
  • Turmeric
  • Ginseng
  • Caffeine compounds

Because these products contain multiple active ingredients, they are usually stopped before surgery to avoid unpredictable interactions.

Arnica and Plastic Surgery: A Helpful Supplement for Bruising

While many supplements should be stopped before surgery, Arnica montana is one of the few commonly recommended products used in plastic surgery recovery.

Arnica is a plant-based homeopathic remedy traditionally used to help reduce:

  • Bruising
  • Swelling
  • Inflammation
  • Post-operative discomfort

Many plastic surgeons recommend Arnica because it may help speed the resolution of bruising and swelling after surgery.

Bruising occurs when small blood vessels break during surgery, allowing blood to collect under the skin. Arnica is believed to support the body’s natural inflammatory response and may help clear this discoloration more quickly.

Although Arnica does not replace good surgical technique, it can be a useful adjunct to recovery.

When to Start Arnica Before Surgery

A common protocol is to start Arnica two to three days before surgery, then continue using it for about 7–10 days after surgery.

This allows the body to have the supplement on board during the early healing phase when bruising and swelling are most prominent.

How to Take Arnica

Arnica is available in several forms:

Arnica pellets (most common): Small dissolvable tablets taken under the tongue.

Typical regimen:

  • Take three to five pellets.
  • Take three times daily.
  • Start using two to three days before surgery.
  • Continue using it for 7–10 days after surgery.

Arnica tablets or capsules: These are used similarly to pellets, but patients should follow the manufacturer’s dosage instructions.

Arnica topical gel or cream: This can be applied to bruised areas after surgery, once the skin is intact and your surgeon approves. Topical Arnica should never be applied to open wounds or incisions.

Supplements That May Be Safe to Continue

Some supplements may be acceptable depending on the patient and procedure.

These can include:

  • Simple protein powders
  • Physician-recommended vitamins
  • Certain medically necessary supplements

However, every surgical plan is different, so patients should always review their supplement list with their surgeon during their pre-operative visit.

Practical Advice Before Your Procedure

Before your surgery, bring a full list of all of the supplements and medications you take, including:

  • Vitamins
  • Herbal supplements
  • Powders
  • Gummies
  • Sleep aids
  • Pre-workout supplements
  • Wellness blends

Even seemingly harmless supplements can affect bleeding, bruising, and anesthesia safety. Providing a complete list helps your surgeon create the safest surgical plan for you and the smoothest possible recovery.

Final Thoughts

Preparing properly for surgery is one of the most important parts of achieving a great result.

Stopping certain supplements before plastic surgery helps reduce bleeding, bruising, swelling, and anesthesia complications. At the same time, supportive products like Arnica may help reduce bruising and inflammation during recovery.
