What Is a Facelift?

A facelift, also known as a rhytidectomy, is a surgical procedure designed to lift, tighten, and reposition the deeper structures of your face that have naturally shifted over time. While non-surgical facial treatments can temporarily soften lines and wrinkles or restore lost volume, only a surgical facelift can elevate the underlying muscle, fat, and connective tissues responsible for more youthful definition and contour. By lifting sagging tissues, smoothing deep folds, and refining your jawline, a facelift helps you look refreshed yet natural.

Modern facelifts have come a long way. At Careaga Plastic Surgery, we customize your procedure to fit your specific anatomy and concerns. We take into account your facial structure, skin elasticity, the degree of aging you’re experiencing, and your aesthetic goals to determine the best approach for your facial rejuvenation. Using this personalized surgical plan, combined with surgical skill and advanced techniques, we can restore natural contour and balance to the lower two-thirds of your face, while avoiding the overly tight or “pulled” look of facelifts past.

Facelift Surgery Can Correct:

Facial Wrinkles

Facial wrinkles can develop anywhere on the face due to gravity, sun damage, and collagen loss. Facelift surgery eliminates wrinkles, folds, and fine lines on the mid and lower face, including those around the mouth. Tightening excess skin allows you to look younger while maintaining a natural appearance.

Facial Sagging

Facial sagging occurs when gravity meets weakened skin and muscle. As the elasticity of your tissues breaks down, they begin to droop under their own weight, causing the muscles to drop toward the jawline and form jowls. This makes you appear older than you are and can alter your facial contours. Facelift surgery returns definition to your cheeks and jawline.

Neck Laxity

Many patients experience age-related loss of skin elasticity, leading to skin laxity and vertical neck banding. Facelift surgery addresses this excess by trimming and tightening the skin, leaving your neck perfectly in balance with your newly enhanced facial contours.

Facelift Options

Facelift surgery restores youthful contours and definition to your mid and lower face. Careaga Plastic Surgery offers variations to the traditional facelift, and our expert surgeons will help determine the best option for you based on your aesthetic goals and desired results.

Traditional Facelift

A traditional facelift is a time-tested technique that targets sagging skin, jowls, and deep lines around your mouth and jawline. Sometimes called an SMAS facelift, this approach tightens the superficial musculoaponeurotic system (SMAS), a layer beneath your skin that plays a significant role in facial structure. By lifting this layer, your surgeon can deliver more comprehensive and longer-lasting results than if they solely tightened lax skin.

A traditional facelift is ideal for patients with moderate to advanced signs of aging who want significant improvement in the jawline and lower face.

Deep-Plane Facelift

A deep-plane facelift is considered one of the most advanced and natural-looking approaches to facial rejuvenation. Rather than tightening the SMAS layer from above, a deep-plane facelift goes deeper, releasing and lifting the muscles, ligaments, and fat pads as a single unit. This allows for more effective correction of concerns like heavy jowls, deep nasolabial folds, and midface sagging.

A deep-plane facelift is particularly beneficial for patients who want dramatic rejuvenation that still appears effortless and natural.

Am I a Good Candidate For a Facelift?

Good candidates for a facelift should be in good general health and have realistic expectations of their results. Ideal facelift candidates wish to correct moderate to severe signs of aging on the face and neck, including:

  • Deep facial creases
  • Jowls and a less defined jawline
  • Sagging skin
  • Loss of volume in the cheeks
  • Neck banding (also known as platysmal banding)

To ensure quality and safety during your facelift procedure and recovery, you should not smoke six weeks before and after your surgery.

What Procedures Can I Combine With My Facelift?

There are several complementary facial procedures (both surgical and non-surgical) that you can combine with your facelift to enhance and complement your results. Combining a neck lift with your facelift is vital if you are experiencing moderate to severe facial laxity, as doing so maintains balance and harmony between your face and neck. During your facelift, an additional small incision is made beneath your chin to remove excess skin and fat that lead to vertical neck banding and laxity, giving you a smoother, more youthful-looking neck.

For comprehensive facial rejuvenation, consider combining your facelift procedure with eyelid surgery, also known as an eye lift or blepharoplasty. Eyelid surgery addresses drooping eyelids that can obstruct your vision and cause you to appear tired, angry, and older, as well as correcting under-eye puffiness, wrinkles, dark circles, and loose skin. You can select upper or lower eyelid surgery, or a combination of both, to fix these concerns.

Your Miami facelift can also be combined with non-surgical options, such as injectables or laser treatments. Dermal fillers and neuromodulators, such as BOTOX® Cosmetic, can address wrinkles in areas of your face not targeted by facelift surgery, and lasers and IPL treatments can treat concerns such as pigment and texture issues. We also recommend these procedures and other skin care treatments to maintain and prolong the results of your facelift.

How Is a Facelift Performed?

What Can I Expect From My Facelift Recovery?

A facelift is an outpatient procedure; however, you must have someone drive you home, and they should stay with you for the first 24 to 48 hours. You will experience swelling, bruising, and mild tightness during the first several days, but this is expected. Keeping your head elevated and applying cold compresses as directed can help minimize swelling and discomfort. Any discomfort is easily managed with prescription or over-the-counter medication. You will likely wear a supportive facial garment or bandages to control swelling and encourage proper healing, and your surgeon may place a drain that will be removed after a day or so.

Although you may feel ready to return to normal daily activities (including work) within 10 to 14 days after your facelift, you should avoid exercising for at least three weeks while you rest and recover. Residual swelling may persist for several weeks, and deep-plane facelift patients may notice it takes a bit longer to resolve, simply because deeper tissues have been manipulated.

By week three, the majority of bruising has resolved, and any residual bruising is easily covered with makeup. Complete healing after your facelift typically takes several months to settle in and refine; however, you’ll see early improvements in your appearance during your recovery.

What Can I Expect From My Facelift Results?

A facelift can noticeably refresh your appearance, restoring youthful structure and smoothness without looking unnatural or overdone. As swelling fades, you’ll notice less jowling and your jawline will become more defined. Deep nasolabial folds and marionette lines will be softer and smoother, and your midface will have a youthful lift.

Results appear gradually as swelling decreases, with the most noticeable improvements becoming clear around the four- to six-week mark, and are designed to be long-lasting. That being said, while a facelift can turn back the clock, the natural aging process will continue. However, with proper care, you can maintain your refreshed appearance for many years.

Ways to prolong and maintain your facelift results include:

  • Wearing broad-spectrum sun protection daily
  • Diligent skin care, including using high-quality cleansers, retinoids, and hydrating products
  • Non-surgical facial treatments, including neuromodulators, injectable fillers, PRP treatments, and  EMFACE®, can help extend the longevity of your facelift.
  • Healthy lifestyle choices, such as staying hydrated and avoiding smoking

By pairing your facelift with a thoughtful skincare and maintenance routine, you can continue enjoying youthful, natural-looking results for many years.

Facelift FAQs

  • A traditional facelift tightens and lifts from above to improve concerns along the jawline and lower face. A deep-plane facelift releases deeper ligaments and lifts the facial tissues as a unit, creating more natural midface rejuvenation and longer-lasting, more comprehensive results.

  • Scars will be present at the incision locations. Fortunately, these incisions are strategically placed in the hairline and creases of your skin so that they will be inconspicuous. Any scarring will fade with time and proper scar care.

  • Facelift surgery improves facial contours at any age, though most facelift patients are between 40 and 60 years old. This is an ideal age range for a facelift procedure, as you still have good skin elasticity, a vital factor for achieving successful, lasting results.

  • General anesthesia is used to ensure a painless procedure.

  • Facelift surgery is a safe procedure when performed by a skilled and experienced surgeon. However, as with any surgical procedure, there are potential risks, including:

    • Anesthesia risks
    • Bleeding
    • Numbness
    • Infection
    • Poor wound healing
    • Nerve injury

Although rare, complications can occur. If you experience any of the above side effects, contact our office immediately.
