Women who are unhappy with the size or shape of their breasts often turn to breast augmentation to enhance their appearance. While breast enhancement surgery offers long-lasting results, some women worry that the scars left behind will detract from their new look. We will cover the basics of breast augmentation scars, including what you can expect, their location, and how to care for your incisions to minimize visible scarring.

Where are Breast Augmentation Scars Located?
Our surgeons at Careaga Plastic Surgery offer multiple incision options, but prefer using the inframammary incision for most breast enhancement patients. This incision is located under the breast along the natural skin crease. The scar will be conveniently concealed under clothing, underwear, and bathing suits.
When patients opt to combine their augmentation with a breast lift, the incisions may extend around the areola, with a single incision running from the base of the areola to the inframammary incision underneath the breast. Known as an anchor incision, this type of breast augmentation technique is usually necessary to allow the surgeon to remove excess skin and reposition the breasts to a more youthful position on the chest.
Dr. Careaga and Dr. Ramos use precise suturing techniques when closing incisions to minimize scarring. Over time, most scars fade to the point that they are barely visible, allowing women to enjoy their new look with confidence, in and out of their clothing.
What to Expect During the Healing Process
You won’t be able to see your incisions immediately after surgery, since they will be covered with a surgical dressing. Once we remove your stitches, about one week after your procedure, you will see your incisions for the first time. They will likely appear raised and red, and there may be some swelling or itching surrounding them. We will provide you with aftercare instructions to keep your incision clean and free of infection.
Throughout the first year after your breast augmentation surgery, your scar’s color will fade, and it will blend with the surrounding skin, making it less visible. You can use silicone sheets or gels and perform a gentle massage on the area to help your scar heal. During your recovery stages, you can take steps to care for your scar and ensure it heals properly.
How to Care for Your Breast Augmentation Scars
Your actions during the first year after surgery can impact the outcome of your scar. These steps can support the healing process and increase your odds for an optimal result:
- Follow all post-operative instructions from your surgeon
- Avoid smoking for several weeks before and after your surgery
- Minimize alcohol intake and adhere to a healthy diet
- Keep your scars out of the sun and use sunscreen with a high SPF
- Drink plenty of water to keep your skin hydrated
While your breast augmentation scars will never be completely invisible, these steps can go a long way toward ensuring they fade sufficiently so they are less noticeable.
