Breast augmentation patients know they’ll get to choose the size and material of their breast implants, but a lesser-known customization is breast implant profile. This blog discusses what the breast implant profile is and how to choose the best option for your frame.

Breast Augmentation Customization

Your breast augmentation is entirely custom to your unique specifications; Dr. Careaga or Dr. William will walk you through all of the options available to you. From implant material to size and projection, there’s a lot to consider, and each choice plays a role in your final breast augmentation result.

Most patients know about breast implant size and material, and likely have an idea of what they’d like. But breast implant profile is a little-known option that has a huge impact on how the breast implants look on the body.

What Is the Breast Implant Profile?

Shape, material, and size are all easy to imagine how they’ll affect the breast augmentation outcome, but breast implant profile is a little more obscure. Essentially, the breast implant profile determines how far it will project from the patient’s chest—it’s basically the measurement of how far your breasts will stick out from your body.

The breast implant profile is determined in part by the shape of the breast implant, specifically its width. The smaller the base width of the implant, the farther it will project off the chest. Profile also contributes to the amount of cleavage the implant will create.

Breast Implant Profile Defined

Depending on the brand, there are various breast implant profile options, including:

  • Low profile
  • Moderate profile
  • Moderate plus profile
  • High profile
  • Ultra high profile

Low Profile Breast Implants

This option has the widest base width and provides minimal projection. Low profile implants provide a moderate amount of cleavage.

Moderate Profile

A step up from low profile implants, moderate profile implants offer slightly more projection, while still looking natural. These also provide a moderate amount of cleavage.

Moderate Plus Profile

In an effort to provide more detailed customization, implant makers provide the moderate plus as an in-between for low profile and high profile. This option has a wider base than moderate implants, providing more cleavage and projection.

High Profile Implants

High profile implants are ideal for those who want to “wow” with the projection and cleavage of their breasts. They also create a more rounded look, increasing the fullness of the upper pole of the breasts.

Ultra High Profile

This option offers the narrowest base, resulting in the most projection. Ultra high profile breast implants create more distinct cleavage and “perkiness.”

Which Breast Implant Profile Is Best For You?

This has a lot to do with your ideal aesthetic result and your natural body type and frame. Because the implant profile determines how far out your breasts will appear, it’s important to work with your natural chest size to create the desired result.

A general rule of thumb: The smaller your natural frame, shoulders, and chest wall, the more you can usually benefit from a higher profile implant, and the opposite is generally true for lower profile implants.

Who Benefits from Low Profile Implants?

A low profile implant has the widest base, meaning it looks best on patients with larger chest walls and shoulders. The implant takes up a little more space on the chest, so it looks more natural if you have a larger space between your breasts. You may want to choose lower profile implants if you want:

  • Softer breasts
  • Fuller sides of the breasts (side boobs)
  • A more natural look

Who Benefits from High Profile Implants?

On the other end of the scale, higher profile implants are more suited to patients with smaller chest walls or small frames altogether. You may also want a high profile implant if you want:

  • Rounder breasts
  • Firmer breasts
  • Perkier breasts (fuller in the upper pole)
