How Has Body Positivity Impacted the World of Plastic Surgery?

Posted May 04, 2021 in Plastic Surgery, Plastic Surgery Trends

3 Minute Read:

Body positivity is a movement that has taken the beauty industry by storm and shifted the landscape of what it means to be beautiful. The movement focuses on building positive body images by promoting the acceptance of all bodies, addressing unrealistic body standards, and helping people build confidence in their own bodies.

While plastic surgery may seem to go in the face of this movement, it doesn’t. Instead, plastic surgery statistics are rising, perhaps because of it.

Plastic Surgery for the Right Reasons

Our society has for a long time been saturated with images that project an unrealistic expectation of what an individual, whether male or female, should look like.

Striving towards this “hopeless and unattainable standard” makes many people experience feelings of self-devaluation or helplessness, and they exhibit unhealthy behaviors and poor mental health when they feel like they are less than enough.

Body positivity promotes the idea that every body type can be celebrated for its unique qualities. This cultivates a healthy and accepting environment that holds no place for body shaming or plastic surgery shaming.

Having a positive outlook on your body does not mean that you cannot choose to change it. And if making a small adjustment will make you feel more confident and better about yourself and your image, how is that anything but positive.

If you truly believe that a nose job (rhinoplasty), tummy tuck (abdominoplasty), or Brazilian Butt Lift will allow you to meet your body goals, then, by all means, do it.

The choices you make to your body are yours and yours alone and should not be dictated by mainstream media, peer pressure, or fear of plastic surgery shaming.

Loving Your Body and Doing What Makes You Happy

With body positivity, we shift the focus from obsessing over external appearances and obtaining an ideal body to finding a deeper sense of gratification from being healthy and on track. Today, we see celebrities, social media influencers, and online communities coming forward to affirm a woman’s (or man’s) natural beauty.

As a result, many individuals are choosing to commit to the procedures they have long been dreaming of, such as breast augmentation or breast lift surgery. Alternatively, some women who once had breast augmentations are now getting their implants removed or resized for a more proportional appearance.

The reality is that while cosmetic surgery is a great way to enhance your appearance and fix poor body image, it can in no way fix other underlying issues that influence how you feel about your body.

Ultimately, the motivation to change something about yourself should not be driven by shame or obligation—it should not be done for the sake of attaining some made-up standard of beauty.

Instead, it always should come from the point of realistic hope of wanting to look and feel like your truest self.
