Laser Tattoo Removal

Tattoos have been used to decorate the body for thousands of year in many parts of the world. For many people tattoos represent the ultimate in artistic expression. Tattoo art has experienced a recent resurgence in popularity, especially in the United States. Some of the growth is due to the influx of new tattoo artists and their popularity on a number of very popular cable television shows, including Miami Ink! Also, there have been new advances in the equipment and new types of inks
In today’s culture more and more people, men and women of all ages, are adorning their bodies with tattoos. But are you struggling with tattoo remorse? Unfortunately, your taste or life circumstances may have changed leaving a design or words on your body that you no longer want. Other reasons for tattoo removal include weight gain, aging of the skin and fading of the tattoo. The tattoos can become unattractive dues to the changes in the skin’s texture and the aging process.

But there is hope! At Careaga Plastic Surgery Center, Dr. Daniel E. Careaga and his Laser technicians can remove unwanted tattoo(s) in most cases with outstanding results and without scarring.

Understanding the tattoo removal process

Tattoos are permanent marks on one’s body that are made by having ink driven into your skin. Many individuals receive their tattoos from tattoo artists that use electric “tattoo guns” that use needles to rapidly fire ink into the skin. The ink used by the tattoo artists is embedded into the skin’s top layer where there is no or little shedding and replacement of the skin. Once the tattoo is placed on the skin, it is permanent.
With the advances in laser technology, many people can avail themselves of having their unwanted tattoos without scaring, downtime, and minimal discomfort. At Careaga Plastic Surgery Center we utilize an advanced laser, Tri-Lase™, to obtain reliable results with minimal risk of adverse patient reactions.

Laser tattoo removal involves using a laser that uses intense pulses of light to break down tattoo pigment in the skin. The pigmentation is broken down by heating and is removed by your body’s normal process. The Tri-Lase™ laser system precisely shatters and destroys the target tattoo while preserving the surrounding healthy cellular structures.

Prior to laser tattoo removal, many patients will have a topical anesthesia applied to their skin. The laser tattoo removal process ranges from 10 to 30 minutes per session dependent upon your tattoo. Patients typically need 3 to 9 treatments, spaced 4 to 6 weeks apart for most professionally applied tattoos. The spacing of the tattoo removal treatments allows sufficient time for your immune system to work and remove the ink particles from your body.
After your laser tattoo removal treatment, some patients experience some slight swelling and skin discoloration. This is a normal part of the process and will disappear as your skin tissue is restored. Dr. Daniel E. Careaga advises the use of an anti-bacterial ointment and ice should be applied.

A consultation with Dr. Daniel E. Careaga will help you determine the best approach to remove your tattoo as there are a number of factors that are considered in your treatment plan. Factors such as where the tattoo is located, the age of the tattoo, colors used on the tattoo design, and your skin’s condition. If you have one color (black) ink tattoo, you may be able to remove it with one treatment. For those multi-colored tattoos, multiple treatments may be needed. Also, it is important to know that the FDA doesn’t regulate the ingredients of the dyes that are used by tattoo artists. The components of the dyes can widely vary. Dr. Daniel E. Careaga will closely exam your tattoo and medical history to determine the best course of action for a successful result.
